What you need to know about motorhome rental Malaga

Campervan hire locations in Malaga

Malaga Airport is the main travel hub in the region connecting visitors from international destinations and the most popular pick-up point for motorhome travellers. If you are not arriving by air, there are city pick up points available as well. Some providers offer free transfers for campervan hire Malaga Airport, but you must read the terms outlined by each rental company and confirm your pick up plan with the local depot.

Campervan hire Malaga planning tips

  • Autovias are the main motorways in Spain. They are good quality roads that are great for long-distance drives. Country roads and village lanes can offer a more scenic route but can be a tight squeeze. Go slow and be prepared to pull over to allow other vehicles to pass. On narrow mountain roads, yield to drivers travelling uphill.
  • It is not recommended to go to Malaga Park after hours when it is dark. Whenever you travel in your motorhome or campervan hire in Spain, always keep your vehicle locked up and don’t pick up strangers. Consider investing in an alarm, and padlock valuables if you are leaving your RV rental for long periods like while camping.
  • Get to know the rules surrounding campervan travel, where you can stay, and the associated costs. The Coastal Law expressly prohibits parking on the coast and beaches and it is forbidden for any vehicle to stay in the National Parks between 10 pm and 6 am.
  • Free parking is rare in the bigger cities, and finding space will be difficult. However, there are many spots set aside for campers and motorhomes to stay overnight on the outskirts of town called “aires”.
  • There are several toll roads close to Málaga. Be prepared to pay these tolls with the appropriate payment method, or plan to avoid them accordingly. Check with your rental provider about your responsibilities with regard to toll payments.
  • Planning to go to Gibralfaro Fortress? It’s a long way to reach, which will take almost half a day to climb the stairs.

What to see and do in your Malaga camper hire

Costa del Sol offers some of the best sightseeing available in Spain. Make sure you visit the local attractions before heading off in your Malaga motorhome.

Alcazaba

An 11th-century Moorish castle that sits on a hill in the middle of the city, Alcazaba has incredible views of the sparkling sea below. This old fort holds a number of relics from excavations on the site, and beneath it lies the beautiful remains of an old Roman theatre. It’s free to enter, where you can walk past the old stage and sit on the stone steps.

The Castillo

Sitting on a larger hill behind the Alcazaba, the ancient fortress of Castillo de Gibralfaro holds beautiful gardens and an exhibit on the various military forces to have occupied the fort. The Castillo requires a hefty hike, so if you need to choose between the Moorish castles, pick Alcazaba.

The Picasso Museum

A place entirely dedicated to the works and life of the most famous artist of the 20th century. As the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, this heritage is an extremely important part of Malaga.

Port of Malaga

Cosy restaurants, a buzzing atmosphere and relaxing views guarantee a lovely evening along the oldest active seaport in Spain.

Guadalhorce

Get in touch with nature when you visit this stunning river estuary. Campervan travellers can stretch their legs with a hike in the lush Mediterranean vegetation and enjoy expansive views.

Campervan hire Malaga: Where to go

Málaga and the Andalusian coast offer you the best of both worlds. Divide your time equally between the lively seaside splendours and the quiet mountains and villages for a holiday you’ll never forget.

Beachy bliss

From Malaga, you can reach some of the most beautiful and exciting beaches in Spain. Whether it’s the wild, untouched shores of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, or the loud, glitzy sands of Marbella and the like, there’s a beach for everyone in Andalusia.

Granada

A fort and forest in Granada, Spain. Pick up your camper and head inland to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Sample tapas in Granada and admire the Alhambra—the palace and fortress of the Moorish monarchs.

El Chorro

50 minutes away in your campervan Malaga is the El Chorro Gorge and Village. This scenic spot is one of the most popular rock climbing attractions in Spain, as it is located next to Desfiladero de los Gaitanes—a fantastic place for hiking and nature appreciation. The ‘Kings Walkway’ is a path in El Chorro suspended high above the river below.

Seville and Cadiz

A visit to Andalusia must include culture-rich Sevilla. A two-hour drive in your Malaga motorhome will bring you to this colourful, exciting place of incredible architecture and flamenco dancing. Heading back towards the coast will bring you to Cadiz, where you will love getting lost within its narrow cobblestone streets.

Village charm

The benefit of a campervan trip in Spain is the ability to spend extra time in the smaller, lesser known destinations. Get off the beaten path and try out your Spanish with the friendly locals in the mountain villages.

Camper rental Malaga: Frequently asked questions

See all of our FAQs

Are the RVs supplied with a full fuel tank and how should I return them?

The general rule is that you should bring the camper van or furgoneta camper back with the same amount of fuel that you had at the start of your trip or viaje. Usually, this means a full tank, but your local depot attendant and rental agreement will advise you of the requirements and any associated penalties.

Is there a 24hr pick up/drop off service?

There are several campervan rental companies in Málaga, each with its own pick up and drop off policies. Check the terms and conditions on the booking pages to understand the pick up options offered by the various companies.

Do I need to bring any additional items to successfully pick up my vehicle?

When you come to collect the Malaga camper, you should bring with you:

  • Driving licence of all the named drivers
  • A credit card in the name of the renter
  • Passport / I.D.

What license do I need to drive a campervan?

Unless you’re hiring a Spanish motorhome or camper with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of more than 3,500 kilograms, a standard EU licence will be fine for renting motorhomes in Málaga. If you do not hold an EU driver’s licence, you may also need an International Driver’s Permit in addition to your original full and valid driver's licence. Check the terms and conditions of your rental agreement to ensure you have the necessary documentation.

Can I travel with a pet?

Many motorhome hire companies in Málaga allow guests to bring along their pets. To find out if this is possible and if there are any associated fees, filter your search results with the ‘Pets allowed’ option. You must also check the individual terms and conditions to ensure you understand the pet policy prior to booking. Keep in mind that certain campgrounds and camping sites may not allow pets, so you’ll have to book ones that explicitly do.

Do I need to have insurance?

The general campervan hire Spain advice recommends that you have hire insurance for campervan rentals in Malaga or anywhere. Some vehicle rentals will include insurance. Check the terms and conditions to understand the inclusions and exclusions offered by the various rental providers. Understanding your coverage is very important and will give you peace of mind.

What age regulations apply to the renting of a motorhome?

The minimum age to hire a campervan in Málaga is 21, but many motorhome rental suppliers will only rent to drivers who are 23 or 25 years of age or above. Those under the age of 25 may have to pay a young drivers surcharge.

Is there a minimum rental period?

Depending on the motorhome hire company you choose, there could be no minimum rental period or minimum rental periods ranging from 1 to 15 days. There are many exceptions to this depending on the time of year, the "ciudad" being the pick up location, and availability.

One-way RV rental is often restricted to a minimum of 14 days. Minimum rental terms should appear in the search results for you to view and compare. If you are unsure or want to make a special request, please contact us.

Is one-way rental allowed?

One-way rentals from Malaga are allowed. If you wish to pick up in Malaga and drop off your campervan in Madrid or Alicante, for example, this is possible. Simply type your desired destination and dates into the search function to check availability and the associated costs for each motorhome hire Malaga deal. A one-way rental fee will likely be charged.

What is included in the rental?

Rental inclusions and exclusions vary with the motorhome Malaga rental providers. It is best to check the terms of each rental listing to understand your entitlements before booking your alquiler de autocaravanas.
