Best times of year to explore Barcelona with a campervan hire

With a cozy motorhome, there’s really no bad time to see the beauty of Barcelona for yourself. It is also often hard to predict the weather because Barcelona sits on “the Wild Coast”. Despite that, Barcelona is known for its very pleasant Mediterranean climate year-round.

For those who enjoy warmer climates, June, July, and August (summer) are ideal, but also the busiest time of the year for the city. Days often reach 20-25 degrees, sometimes spiking in the 30s. For more flexible travelers, visiting in spring or winter is a great idea to avoid the mass of tourists. Just make sure you wrap up for the 5-10 degrees Celsius days through Winter, and keep a sweater and umbrella handy for Spring, when showers pass through over 16-20 degrees Celsius days.

Our top camping tips

Follow these tips to help you get the best out of your motorhome rental and your Spanish adventure.

  • Check if your campsite has a curfew so that you aren’t locked out or can’t set up after hours
  • Make sure you know when public transport ends for the night as these public vehicles may be close to none after a certain time.
  • Keep a close eye on your pockets, and keep valuables safe— Barcelona is Europe's pickpocketing capital.
  • Brush up on your Spanish basics, or make sure you can translate with your phone online if you can—some restaurants only offer menus in Spanish.
  • Thanks to their national nap time, the “siesta”, meal times are generally: breakfast at 9 am, lunch at 2 pm, and dinner at 9 pm.
  • Many shops stay open until much later than in other countries because of their midday napping hours.

Must see’s and top to-do’s in Barcelona

Thanks to its colorful history with many converging cultures crossing paths and even Barcelona is rich with distinct views, flavors, and sounds.

Art and culture lovers will marvel at the many remarkable collections, galleries and museums packed into the city. History buffs will have a field day exploring stunning architecture, memorable sites, and other points of interest. And almost anyone will have an unforgettable time reveling in the city's nightlife, eating at world-class restaurants, and roaming and relaxing throughout the many sandy beaches in the area.

Just save some time to explore the other stunning coastal city of Alicante in your campervan. But for now, here are our top picks you must see and do while you’re in Barcelona:

See the sights

Barcelona is home to some of the world's most gorgeous architecture, many of which were designed by architect Antoni Gaudi. You’ve probably already heard of his most famous structure, the landmark church La Sagrada Familia, but Guaid is also responsible for Casa Batilo, Park Güell, and Casa Mila—all extraordinary works of modern art.

Aside from Gaudi’s buildings, Barcelona has other exciting national treasures like the Parc del Laberint d’Horta, an eccentric garden that recreates those found in Greek mythology. Or La Rambla, a mile-long walking boulevard that sits in the heart of the city.

Eat the food

Some of the best restaurants to check out in Barcelona include:

  • CincSentits - classic Spanish dishes modernized
  • La Taqueria - The city’s favorite Mexican street food restaurant
  • Bacoa - a local institution and home to mouth-watering burgers
  • Platja Ca la Nuri - Delectable seafood and hand-picked wines
  • Lata-Berna - A favorite for creative tapas options and a great beer menu

Embrace the culture

A trip/viaje to Barcelona wouldn’t be complete without visiting its cultural hot spots. Art lovers won’t want to miss checking out the Picasso Museum, located half an hour's drive from Barcelona Airport. It is home to a vast collection of the famed artist's greatest works (and admission is free on Sundays!)

If you love food and markets, you’ll also want to wander through La Boqueria, Barcelona’s oldest market with over 200 stands. Fill your tummies with a food symphony of delicious, freshly fried fishes, cured meats, olives, cheeses, bread, and all other things Mediterranean and tasty.

Take a Nap

No, seriously… Barcelona, much like the rest of Spain, basks in a daily ritual called the “siesta”, or afternoon nap. Many businesses are closed between 2-5 pm for this reason. So if you’re wandering around in the afternoon and wondering where everyone is, park yourself down somewhere and enjoy the city's quietest daytime hours.
