Guide to driving your RV in Edmonton

We maintain that a safe and incident-free trip is the best kind of road trip. To help you achieve that, we have put together some tips and tricks to read before you embark on an RV rental adventure from Edmonton. Arm yourself with some knowledge of the local customs and road rules!

  •  In Canada, you must always drive on the right! If you are not accustomed to this road layout, you should take some time to acclimatize.
  • Distances are posted in kilometres and speeds are posted in kilometres per hour. The default maximum speed limit on urban roads in Alberta is 50 kilometres per hour. Highway speed limits generally range from 80 to 100 kph. Always check the posted signs!
  • On tighter urban streets, always be aware of the size of your motorhome and drive accordingly. When entering a parking building, check the height restriction.
  • If you’re heading into remote prairie or mountain regions watch out for wildlife on the roads, particularly at dusk or dawn. A moose can do some serious damage even to a large vehicle.
  • Legal consequences for drivers under the influence of alcohol in Alberta start at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05%. This is very low; we highly recommend abstaining entirely from alcohol before driving.
  • If you are renting an RV during winter, we recommend asking your rental supplier whether the vehicle will be equipped with winter tires. These are not legally mandated but offer additional traction in wet or snowy conditions.
  • Are RV rentals pet-friendly? Yes, generally, you can bring your fur babies, but please double-check with your chosen supplier if there is an extra fee for pets.
  • Edmonton has some campgrounds and RV parks such as Glowing Embers RV Park, Memory Lane Campground and RV Park, or North Saskatchewan River Valley to make you feel comfortable if you want a good night's rest.

Our number one tip for renters is simply to listen carefully during their orientation to the vehicle. The depot staff will know how to operate your specific motorhome, so take advantage of their knowledge! Take notes and ask questions.

Destination ideas for your motorhome rental from Edmonton

With the highways of Canada stretching east and west, Edmonton is a great place from which to begin an epic quest across the country. For a lengthy road trip, you might head your campervan rental towards Vancouver, Toronto, Whitehorse, or one of many other fantastic urban centres in Canada. Calgary, of course, is just a short drive south.

Should you wish to use Edmonton as a base, you’ll find plenty of fantastic things to see and do within a day’s drive of the city. The few listed below might get you started on planning an unforgettable itinerary!

Elk Island National Park

Drive less than an hour east of Edmonton and you’ll come across this wonderland of nature and wildlife. It’s a refuge for bison, elk, and a range of birds, with things to do, see and enjoy year-round.

Jasper

A lake, forest and mountains in Jasper National Park. This charming mountain town, half a day’s drive from Edmonton, is the ideal weekend getaway. In fact, you could spend a week or more visiting the town and exploring the vast surrounding Jasper National Park. Outdoor adventures abound, making it a perfect RV destination!

Lake Louise

Lake Louise is one of Canada’s most-photographed sites because of its turquoise, glacier-fed lake ringed by high peaks within the Banff National Park. Swim or boat on the stunningly beautiful lake, walk the many hiking trails, try some river rafting, or take part in snow sports during the colder months.

Sundre

This town is about three hours south of Edmonton, and a fantastic base from which to explore the mountains and also learn about and experience some of the area’s indigenous history. There are lots to do in and around Sundre, so plan to stay awhile.

Peace River

The views are incredible, the outdoor recreation opportunities are varied, and the town itself has great shops, a pioneer museum, regular events, and family-friendly activities on offer.
